Γνωρίστε τον Αλέξανδρο Ιόλα!
Είναι δύσκολο να σκιαγραφήσει κανείς την πολύπλευρη προσωπικότητα του Αλέξανδρου Ιόλα, η οποία στο πέρασμα των χρόνων έχει αποκτήσει «μυθικές» διαστάσεις, βασισμένη κυρίως σε αφηγήσεις προσώπων που συνδέθηκαν -λιγότερο ή περισσότερο- μαζί του.
Ο Αλέξανδρος Ιόλας -ή Κωνσταντίνος Κουτσούδης, όπως ήταν το πραγματικό του όνομα- γεννημένος στην Αλεξάνδρεια της Αιγύπτου, σημάδεψε το δημόσιο βίο στην Ελλάδα της μεταπολίτευσης και ονομάστηκε «μαικήνας των τεχνών». Μετά από μια επιτυχημένη αλλά και βραχύβια πορεία ως χορευτής του Ballet Theatre Company αρχικά και διευθυντής του Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas στη Νέα Υόρκη αργότερα, ο Αλέξανδρος Ιόλας ο οποίος στα νεανικά του χρόνια πόζαρε ως μοντέλο για καλλιτέχνες, αποφάσισε να ασχοληθεί με τις τέχνες σε επαγγελματικό επίπεδο. Το 1944 άνοιξε την πρώτη του γκαλερί στη Νέα Υόρκη, την Hugo Gallery με την υποστήριξη της Maria Hugo, δούκισσας του Gramontκαι σε διάστημα 30 χρόνων επέκτεινε την επαγγελματική του δραστηριότητα στο Παρίσι, το Μιλάνο, τη Γενεύη, τη Ρώμη, τη Ζυρίχη και τη Μαδρίτη. Αυτή η διεθνής πορεία συνδέθηκε με μια πληθώρα προσωπικοτήτων της διανόησης, των γραμμάτων, της τέχνης και της πολιτικής -από τον Κωνσταντίνο Καβάφη μέχρι τον Sergei Prokofiev και από τον Jean Cocteau μέχρι την οικογένεια Roosevelt- ενώ υπήρξε σύμβουλος για σημαντικούς συλλέκτες, όπως οι John και Dominique de Menil στο Χιούστον των Η.Π.Α.
Όσον αφορά στο εμπόριο τέχνης, το όνομα του Αλέξανδρου Ιόλα συνδέθηκε με την αναγνώριση στις Η.Π.Α. των σουρεαλιστών που είχαν εγκατασταθεί στη χώρα εξαιτίας του Β΄ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου ενώ υπήρξε αποκλειστικός αντιπρόσωπος του Max Ernst και του René Magritte μέχρι το θάνατο τους. Το 1953 διοργάνωσε την πρώτη ατομική έκθεση του άγνωστου μέχρι τότε Andy Warhol. Συνεργάστηκε επίσης με επιλεγμένους καλλιτέχνες της δεύτερης γενιάς των Γάλλων Νέων Ρεαλιστών (Nouveaux Réalistes) και προώθησε μεγάλες προσωπικότητες όπως τους Paul Theck, Edward Kienholz, Jannis Kounellis και Pino Pascali. Οι επαφές με Έλληνες καλλιτέχνες εντοπίζονται από τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 1950 όταν ξεκίνησε να εμπορεύεται τόσο έργα των Τσαρούχη, Χατζηκυριάκου-Γκίκα, Μόραλη και Γουναρόπουλου όσο και έργα της «νέας γενιάς», του Τάκι, του Ακριθάκη, του Παύλου, του Τσόκλη κ.ά. Meet Alexander Iolas!
|
It is hard to delineate the multifaceted personality of Alexandre Iolas, which as time goes by has come to be viewed in “mythical” proportions, based mostly on the colourful remembrances of those who were connected with him on greater and lesser levels.
Alexandre Iolas, born Constantine Koutsoudis in Alexandria, Egypt, made an indelible mark on Greek public life around the time of the restoration of democracy and was hailed as a great “patron of the arts”. After a brief, yet successful, stint as a ballet dancer, initially with the Ballet Theatre Company, and later as the head of the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas in New York, Iolas, who had posed for artists when younger, decided to enter the art world on a professional level. In 1944 he opened his first gallery in New York, the Hugo Gallery, with the support of Maria Hugo, Duchess of Gramont, and over a span of 30 years he expanded through opening galleries in Paris, Milan, Geneva, Rome, Zurich and Madrid. This international journey saw him cross paths and associate with a host of the major personalities of the intellectual world, the world of art and politics - from Constantine Cavafy to Sergei Prokofiev and from Jean Cocteau to the Roosevelt family - while he was also a consultant for important collectors such as Dominique de Menil in Houston, U.S.A.As far as the world of art is concerned, the name of Alexandre Iolas is mainly connected with the recognition of the Surrealists in the U.S.A., who had come to the country due to the 2nd World War, and he was the exclusive representative for Max Ernst and René Magritte until their deaths. In 1953 he organized the first solo exhibition of, the then unknown, Andy Warhol. He also collaborated with selected artists from the second generation of the French Nouveaux Réalistes and promoted great personalities such as Paul Theck, Edward Kienholz, Jannis Kounellis and Pino Pascali. His contacts with Greek artists can be traced to the mid 1950s, when he began to deal in the works of Tsarouchis, Chatzikyriakos-Gikas, Moralis and Gounaropoulos, as well as works of the “new generation”, Takis, Akrithakis, Pavlos, Tsoclis etc. [M.
