Γνωρίζετε για τη δωρεά των Γάλλων καλλιτεχνών στην Ελλάδα?
Το χειμώνα του 1942 το ζεύγος Milliex βρισκόταν στο γαλλικό νότο έχοντας εγκαταλείψει την Ελλάδα μετά την εισβολή των ναζιστικών στρατευμάτων. Τότε ακριβώς δημιουργείται η ιδέα μιας προσφοράς προς την Ελλάδα που αν είχε κατέλθει στο ζόφο και το θάνατο της πείνας και της κατοχής, αντιστεκόταν ωστόσο σθεναρά και ηρωικά.
Αρχικά πρόθεσή τους ήταν να συγκεντρώσουν κείμενα Γάλλων διανοουμένων με θέμα την Ελλάδα και το χειμαζόμενο λαό της και να εκδώσουν ένα βιβλίο-λεύκωμα. Ο πρώτος Γάλλος καλλιτέχνης που ανταποκρίθηκε ήταν ο André Fougeron που πρότεινε ένα χειρόγραφο κείμενο και ένα υπογεγραμμένο έργο του. Αμέσως μετά ο Henri Matisse προσέφερε ένα σχέδιό του και πρότεινε ορισμένους καλλιτέχνες στους οποίους οι Milliex θα μπορούσαν να απευθυνθούν και να ζητήσουν έργα τους. Για την κίνηση αυτή, έδειξε ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον ο Christian Zervos, Έλληνας του Παρισιού και σημαντική προσωπικότητα στο χώρο των εικαστικών τεχνών.
Έτσι το τάμα των Milliex διαφοροποιείται στην πορεία καθώς διαμορφώνεται η ιδέα προσφοράς σύγχρονων έργων τέχνης, με σκοπό τη μελλοντική δημιουργία αίθουσας σύγχρονης ζωγραφικής στην Εθνική Πινακοθήκη. Αρχικά η δωρεά περιελάμβανε 29 αντικείμενα, πίνακες, σχέδια, χαρακτικά, γλυπτά και βιβλία τέχνης που έφεραν μαζί τους οι Milliex το χειμώνα 1945-1946, αργότερα συμπληρώθηκε με μερικά ακόμη έργα που στάλθηκαν το 1948 στην Ελλάδα και το 1979 έφτασαν στη χώρα και τα χειρόγραφα αντικείμενα.

Do you know the story about the Donation of the French Artists to Greece?
In the winter of 1942, the Milliex couple were in the south of France having left Greece after the Nazi troops invaded. It was then the idea was formed of making some sort of offering to Greece which though suffering through the gloom and deadly starvation of occupation, was nevertheless resisting stalwartly and heroically.
The initial intention of the Milliex couple, was to gather texts by French intellectuals with Greece and its sorely tried people as their subject, and to publish them in an album. André Fougeron was the first French artists to respond, with his offer of a manuscript text and a signed work.
Immediately afterward, Henri Matisse offered a drawing and suggested several artists to whom the Milliexs might address themselves and ask for their works. Christian Zervos, a Greek from Paris, and an important presence in the visual arts world, was especially interested in this idea.
Thus the “vow”, if you will, that the Milliexs had made, began to differentiate itself as the idea took shape of offering contemporary works of art with the aim of the future creation of a room of modern French Art at the National Gallery. Originally, the donation contained 29 objects, paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures and art books which the Milliexs brought with them in the winter of 1945-1946. Later, the gift was supplemented by several more works which were sent to Greece in 1948. In 1979, the manuscript texts reached the country as well.
